Planning the Seating: Who Sits Where?

Planning the Seating

Okay, yesterday we covered the chairs, today we are covering putting people in the chairs.

The Head Table:

The standard is to put the bride and groom in the middle and have the bridal party seated on each side of them.  One alternative is to have no head table, just a sweetheart table for the bride and groom and have the bridal party dispersed at the regular tables.  Anyone doing anything different for the head table?

The rest of the tables:

So who should you sit where?  You want people to feel comfortable and you also want them to mingle.  So, try to sit people with a few people they know and also have some people they don’t know.  Typically, you will sit the close family near the head table or the sweetheart table.  But, like most things, there are no strict rules.   You can be creative!

Table numbers or names?  How are you doing it?

Assigned seats or random?

If you are looking for a nice tool to create your seating chart, checkout toptableplanner.  The seating chart shown above was created there.  You can easily “build” the tables and lay them out as they will be in your venue.  Then you can drag and drop names where you want them.  It’s pretty neat, you can try it for free on their website.

Rhonda, I actually blogged about this almost exact same thing yesterday! We need to stop sharing a brain! But then again, great minds think alike!

Hi Rhonda! Since you asked about head table alternatives, I thought I would share mine. Since we only have 2 bridesmaids and 2 groomsmen, we’re thinking of having a head table that also includes our bridal party and their dates. I know I’ve never liked it when my date and I are split up, but we also want to hang out with our friends during dinner!

Hi Darci! Great to hear from you again! I like that idea. I’m sure both your bidal party and their dates will appreciate it.

Have you found a lighting designer yet? Or are you going to do it yourself?

Thanks! The lighting designer saga continues…I have talked to a few people & am waiting to hear back from one person who seems pretty reasonable. I will keep you posted!

I also got a quote on the draping inside the tent (you should sit down for this) $13,500!

Wow! You can practically build a whole new building for that! I’m in the wrong business!

Thanks for the useful tips! I was just having a look at the toptableplanner site. We’re probably going to have named tables and they’ve also got a really good list of ideas - http://www.toptableplanner.com/table_names.php

Thanks for finding that Raymond!
