Being the dedicated wedding blogger that I am, I traveled over 200 miles in 115 degree temperatures to make sure you had an on the scene report about the 7 -7 -07 wedding frenzy in Las Vegas. But, also being an absent minded wedding blogger, in my excitement to go to Las Vegas I forgot my camera. So I borrowed one and had to wait for the pictures to be emailed to me.
First a little background. Not sure how often that winning combination of numbers comes along, something like every 25 years I think, but I guess people want all the luck they can get when it comes to getting married so it became the most popular wedding date in recent history. How big of a deal was it?…Clark County, Nevada issued over 1,600 wedding licenses last Friday, over four times the norm. The wedding coordinator at the Imperial Palace said they were having 39 weddings on 7-7-07 when they normally have around 5! They were rotating couples through the chapel on 15 minute intervals at one point! My husband and I had lunch in the mall at the Venetian on Saturday and saw no less than 20 brides and grooms walking around in their suits and gowns during a 1 hour period.
You may think this sounds pretty cheesy, who wants to get married in a mall, or in a Las Vegas “production line” wedding chapel? Well, I had the same thoughts when I was in the Ellis Island Casino, not a very classy place, when I saw a groom dressed in his suit, sitting at the slot machine, and his bride dressed in her gown standing there watching him, she didn’t seem too impressed. Not the kind of memories I would want of my wedding night. But, I also came to believe the whole Vegas wedding thing wasn’t that bad. With the crazy wedding extravagance that is becoming the norm, having a budget friendly, low planning stress Vegas wedding sounds somewhat appealing. After all, unless you go gamble a bunch of money away after your ceremony, you might be able to still be debt free after your wedding. Many hotels and chapels in Vegas have reasonable package deals that include everything you need including the minister, photographer, and cake.
The nicest wedding we saw was at the Venetian. The bride’s name was Misty (pictured below), she was looking so cute I had to take her picture. She got married on one of the bridges that cross the indoor canal in the Venetian’s mall. She had a full bridal party, videographer, photographer, and a small group of guests. They had a great little ceremony which was followed by cheers from everyone in the area that saw them kiss at the end (it was a beautiful moment to see strangers applauding them). Then an accordion player played the song “Misty” made famous by Johnny Mathis. The whole scene really was beautiful and gave a much better impression of what a Vegas wedding can be. Congratulations Misty if you are out there.
