Top 5 Wedding Blog Posts of the Week!

It’s time once again for the Top-5 Wedding Blog Posts of the Week!  Found a lot of great posts this week so grab a cup of coffee and sit back and relax.  You are about to be taken on a stroll through the best wedding blog posts (in my opinion) of the week.  If I’m missing any that you thought were better, please share!

1.        I’m starting off with one of the most interesting articles I’ve seen in a while from my old blogger friend Katie over at Ethical Weddings.  Ethical Weddings is a great green wedding blog over in England.  Do you think Americans are extravagant about their weddings?  Do you think we go overboard?  Well check out this post entitled “Weddings… at any Cost,” we are not alone.  Very interesting read!

2.       Staying on the green wedding theme, here’s a new resource for you.  Liene over at Blue Orchid Designs has started up a Flickr group dedicated to green weddings.  Looking for some green wedding inspiration?  Check out this post entitled “Green Weddings on Flickr” for information.

3.       Last time I had Style Me Pretty on the Top-5, Abby was on the Martha Stewart Show, this time she was on the Lifetime Network show “Get Married.”  Abby has done an outstanding job representing the wedding blog community and she has been a great help to me personally.  She actually gave me my first break about a year ago by letting me guest blog on Style Me Pretty.  It will be nice to someday say, “I used to know her when…”  She is definitely destined for bigger things.   So to see her on “Get Married”  checkout  Style Me Pretty on Get Married.”

4.       Polka Dot Bride is starting a new series the “ABC of Weddings.”  It looks like it’s going to be a great source of information for everyone planning their wedding.  She just started out with “A” this week with a post about how to include special touches from your ancestry in your wedding.  So, checkout “The ABC of Weddings: A is for Ancestry.”

5.       If you did any wedding blog reading this week you would have heard about the RealSimple Weddings Book that was published by the folks at RealSimple Magazine it was blogged about on pretty much every wedding blog out there.   Well something you may not know is that Margit, an editor for RealSimple.com is getting married and just started her own wedding blog.   Currently there’s only four posts on it but she seems to be off to a good start so check out Margit’s blog!

Honorable Mention:  I had to mention that my friend Melissa over at Masterpiece Weddings is running her first giveaway!   So if you want a $50 gift card, go check out this post at Masterpiece Weddings!

Hope you have a great weekend!

Need More Oprah? Here’s the Answer to Your Prayers!

Oprah Winfrey Network

You’ve seen her get a crowd of 30,000 people, the largest event so far for the ’08 Presidential race, for Barack Obama. She has a daily US audience of over 14-million, not to mention the millions in 132 other countries. Books mentioned on Oprah’s Book Club soar up the best sellers list. And, recently she’s been a very successful movie producer with Denzel Washington’s “Great Debaters,” which is by the way a great movie. So, what’s next for Oprah? How about a whole network where you can watch Oprah and Oprah selected programming 24 hrs per day?

Oprah Winfrey NetworkWell, your dream has come true! Beginning in 2009, the Oprah Winfrey Network will take the place of the Discovery Health Channel and bring you, and 70 million other households.

According to the press release:

OWN’s mission is to create multiple platforms for women, men and their families with a purpose and a passion: to celebrate life, to inspire and entertain, empowering viewers around the world to live their best lives, and by doing so, lift the lives of those around them in ever-widening circles

In addition to providing her talent, and personal commitment, Winfrey will have full editorial control over the joint venture and will be responsible for OWN’s programming, branding and creative vision.

Here’s what Oprah said about the network:

“Fifteen years ago, I wrote in my journal that one day I would create a television network, as I always felt my show was just the beginning of what the future could hold,” said Oprah Winfrey, who will serve as chairman of OWN. “For me, the launch of ‘The Oprah Winfrey Network’ is the evolution of the work I’ve been doing on television all these years and a natural extension of my show.”

How Important are Your Bridesmaids?

Jenny_Yoo_Bridesmaid_Dresses

Conde Nast came out with some interesting statistics last week about the big part bridesmaids play in the wedding industry.  Bridesmaids are obviously an essential part of your wedding, assuming they play their part.  There are a lot of things the bride has to worry about during the months of planning and especially on the wedding day itself!  Hopefully your bridesmaids will be helping you get through the process without losing your mind!  That being said remember you are also asking a lot of your bridesmaids in terms of money to buy a new dress that they may never wear again or even like.  So how can you make sure you keep your bridesmaids happy?

- Let them pick their own dress style.  If you planned on doing this you are in the minority (see below).  Don’t worry you can keep control of your look and theme by specifying the color.  But, your bridesmaids will be at least able to pick a style that goes with their body type and maybe get one they will wear again!   Check out these beautiful examples above from Jenny Yoo.

- Make sure you get them a nice, personal gift as a token of your appreciation.  Notice I said personal.  I’m a big fan of getting both the groomsman and the bridesmaids a gift that is unique to their likes and personality.  It really shows that your care.

- Any other ideas out there?

Here are the interesting statistics from the Conde Nast’s press release:

  • Brides have an average of 5 bridesmaids in their wedding.

  • Based on 2.2 million weddings per year, there are approximately 11 million bridesmaids each year.

  • There are 44,230 weddings every weekend, 23 million bridesmaids and groomsmen, and almost 380 million wedding guests.

  • 64% of brides have their bridesmaids dress identically.

  • Bridesmaid’s dresses cost an average of $691 total, figuring to be $138 each with the average of 5 attendants.

Top Five Wedding Blog Posts of the Week!

Hope I didn’t lose too many people during my two week vacation.  Thanks for hanging in there!  Well, it’s time for the first Top 5 Wedding Blog Posts of the Week of 2008!

1.        First off I’d like to give a mention about the Wedding Podcast Network!  They have a great lineup of interesting podcasts featuring famous wedding professionals and great information to help you plan your wedding.  Our Wedding Plus was  lucky enough to be mentioned in a recent podcast to listen to our 60 seconds of fame, go to the Wedding Podcast Network and listen to “Bridal Scene #27”  the podcast lasts around 90 minutes and we are mentioned in the middle.

2.       The guys seem to be typically left on their own to get ready for the wedding while the ladies have all kinds of professional help.  Guys, you can thank Liene from Blue Orchid Designs for coming to your aid with her post “getting ready tips for the groom.”

3.       My old blogging buddy Thryn from Wedlog planned and blogged about her eco-friendly wedding from start to finish.  It was an amazing process to follow and her wedding turned out beautifully!  Now here wedding is going to be featured on the Sundance Channel!  Find out more about it at her wedding blog.  Congratulations Thryn!

4.       Want to be a wedding planner?  Well, you might be interested in getting some experience by interning for an experienced wedding planner.  Evidently your are not alone.  So, if you are contemplating approaching a wedding planner to ask about interning, you might want to read “why I won’t hire you!”  It’s blunt, straight forward, and true!

5.       Finally, one of my favorite wedding blogs made me aware of the 2008 Bloggie Awards.  Unfortunately, I can’t remember which one, if your out there let me know and I’ll update this post.  But, evidently this is a pretty big deal.  So I highly recommend you go to the 2008 Bloggies website and vote for your favorite blog…”Our Wedding Plus!”

See you next week!

When to order your Wedding Invitations

Wedding Invitations

According to the Wedding Invitation Etiquette Guide over at eInvite.com you should order your wedding invitations as soon you set your date, time, and place for your wedding. They say three to six months before the ceremony is what most experts suggest. But give yourself as much time as possible to not be rushed.
Some other issues you need to think about is taking into account your wedding theme or colors when you order your wedding invitations, so make sure you think that through early in your planning process. Some say that is the first thing to think about since it drives your choices for dresses, venue décor, etc. as well.

Are you going to have a calligrapher address your envelopes? Plan on including an extra month for that!

Setting the RSVP deadline: The bottom line driving your schedule is getting your seat count finalized to give to your venue and/or caterer. I recommend you set your RSVP deadline around a week prior to the date you need to provide a seat count. Why? Because I can guarantee many RSVPs will be late or not sent back at all causing you to try to track people down to get an answer! This is one of the biggest complaints couples have! Send your invitations out to your guests about a month prior to your RSVP deadline, not too long prior. I think more than two months prior will cause a lot of people to misplace your invitation and even forget to send the RSVP.

Any other suggestions or comments out there? Any horror stories?
